It seems that the kids complain of ear aches in the middle of the night...so I like to be prepared with a few options. Here's the steps I follow when my kids start complaining of an ear ache.
1-I ask myself: Why could it be hurting? Have they been swimming? Had a cold? These questions help me to know how to proceed to get the best results, however when I don't know…I follow my list below.
2- I gently press on their ear to see where it's hurting, this helps me determine if the ache is internal or external. (most common is external…or 'swimmer's ear' which can even happen from a shower or a bath.)
The 3 things I've found that work best:
#1 Thieves Oil-Apply Thieves oil behind their hurting ear.
I've found that this oil (diluted or undiluted) can help with the pain overall.
#2 Purification - This oil encourages the Eustachian tube to flow properly…aka I use this if I think it's clogged or if their ear is hurting from water being inside.
#3 Boo-Boo Bag- Any Rice Bag will work, however my favorite (especially for my kids) is the Boo-Boo Bag size. It's easy to use and I've noticed that my kids are instantly content again when they apply the warmed bag to their ear.

According to our doctor, heat is the best method to use when they wake up in the middle of the night complaining about their ears.
Thankfully, my kids haven't had to use antibiotics to get rid of an ear infection---yet. Most of the time I've noticed that the complaints of pain go away right away but sometimes they last for 2-3 days.
If the complaint continues, I just repeat the above steps as often as they complain or offer over the counter pain meds to them but rarely do they complain more than 1-3 times.
Either way, I remember growing up and having ear infections every 4-6 weeks like clock work and nothing would help besides my heated rice bag.
